The Luxury of Enough
Our definition of luxury has changed over the years. It includes:
- • Fresh produce from the farmer's market
- • Strolling the rose garden at Capitol Park
- • Meeting friends for coffee
- • A beach cruiser with a basket and bell
- • Outdoor business meetings
- • Living in a place cool enough that our kids want to visit
- • Reinventing the "potluck" dinner party
- • Friends that stop by with a bottle of wine
- • Deviled eggs from Waterboy
- • A delta breeze in our courtyard
- • Making an evening of a local art exhibit
- • Hot chocolate from Ginger Elizabeth
- • Walking to the latest play at the Community Center
- • One pair of great high heels and a party dress...because you never know
Having just enough...
Gratitude for simple pleasures...
These are the luxuries that matter to us.

In December of 2006 my husband Duncan and I decided to move from our house in Land Park back to Midtown. I had lived in Midtown with my son at 16th and J when Duncan and I began dating. But now, as a blended family with 2 kids, a dog and a gold fish, We knew it would be tough to find the right place.
We looked for about 6 months. We saw many places we loved, but nothing that satisfied our complete list. We thought we needed the following:
- 1. 1,500 square feet or more
- 2. Single story
- 3. Two full bathrooms
- 4. Connected outdoor living
- 5. Good space for entertaining
- 6. Privacy for the adults
- 7. Flexibility for our growing kids
- 8. Walking distance to everything
I have always worked for developers, so I figured, "Why not purchase our own land and just build it ourselves?" Shortly thereafter we went out, purchased our first site and began creating our vision.
On a trip to Napa with my friend Linda I described our plan to build a loft. At some point in my 75 minute monologue she said, "add another floor, I'm in". Linda also wanted to make sure our lofts aged gracefully. They had to work whether we were 45 or 85.
We designed 1813 Capitol Avenue for ourselves. We've had a lot of people ask us about the project. The lifestyle we are seeking resonates with many.
In June 2007 we formed Young Clifford, LLC. We are focusing on mixed-use, environmentally friendly, urban projects. It has been a great experience. I feel like the luckiest woman in the world. I have a great marriage partner and a great business partner. We are living "the luxury of enough"

Yes, it started with "add another floor, I'm in". I had no idea how much I would love the process and the people who would be involved in our Young Clifford projects. The more we listen to people the more we understand how many of us are ready to return to basics.
The Young Clifford values are reflected in our statement "The Luxury of Enough". You don't have to look far to understand how fortunate we are to have a roof over our heads and food on the table. Our thoughts and actions have shifted away from chasing the elusive brass ring to celebrating the simple pleasures of our family friends and a saner, smaller lifestyle. We hope this translates to the environments we are creating at Young Clifford.
We have designed with our values, family and lifestyle in mind. We know aging is a reality but it can be done healthfully. Our community matters to us, so it is important to walk out the door and be immediately connected to it. A smaller footprint is a must as there are simply fewer resources to go around and a respect for this is necessary.

4TH SUN APR, 2011The Greening of Sacramento
As he settles comfortably into a couch in his Midtown office, David Mogavero's professorial look and serious demeanor are offset by the twinkle in his eye and the fervor of his speech. He talks about his abiding passion, the future of cities in general, and Sacramento in particular. Infill development, critical to the future of the Sacramento region and the well being of its citizens, is an amour to which he's devoted over thirty years of his life. Read more...

6TH THU JAN, 2011Second Saturday
December is not the best time to survey the status of Second Saturday. Each winter, the monthly event goes into a sort of suspended animation; it gets cold, Christmas parties start to rival art receptions, and the galleries themselves have holiday parties which upstage their own monthly events. Bit by bit Second Saturday starts to look like a ghost town. Read more...
